on COLDBLOODED....
Alicia Hall Moran has never been interested in staying in one place, and Coldblooded is her most audacious move yet. Accompanied by a constellation of collaborators—each a virtuoso in their own right—she moves through sonic territories with the confidence of someone who knows that genres were meant to be flouted. Her signature voice is here a changeling: tender and ferocious, ancient and utterly contemporary, capable of holding the weight of Black musical genealogies while shattering the bleak complacencies of the musical present. Matched by musicians who share her adventurousness, Coldblooded creates a kaleidoscopic sound world that shifts and transforms with each track. The album spirals from ice-walking experimentalism through groove and remix, folk and funk, instrumental reverie and family legacy, landing in gospel's transformative glow. Yet through it all, Moran's voice remains the compass—orienting us as she navigates these varied landscapes at breakneck velocity. She is an artist who can take the listener anywhere: we eagerly follow. –Tavia Nyong'o
Coldblooded, the latest by conceptual vocal artist Alicia Hall Moran, possesses its own sonic territory: a metaphoric plane of ice where new song forms are imagined, and genre obliterates. Poised and perpetually on-point, she's a vocalist, songwriter, actress, pianist, lyricist and ice skater here, organizing Coldblooded like a book of short stories with illustrations. Alicia's mezzo-soprano voice shades each track in diverse color, painting with flips, loops, crossovers and combinations borrowed from her ice skating technique. Bold musical choices and unapologetic confidence bring fire to this collection. Reverb, high and low pass filters, and digital manipulations deliver other-wordly frequencies. She’s painting with style at subzero, for the new ice age. —Guthrie P. Ramsey
